Position Title: CAD Drafter – Substation Design

Location: Alabaster, AL

Reports To: Manager of Engineering

Salary Range: $48,000 – $58,000 (commensurate with experience)

Our client is a local engineering firm specializing in utility infrastructure. With a focus on power delivery design, their team combines long-term industry knowledge with a commitment to quality and precision. They are currently seeking a detail-oriented and motivated CAD Drafter to join their growing team.

Position Summary

The CAD Drafter will be responsible for producing 2D layout drawings and design packages for electric utility substations. The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of AutoCAD drafting techniques and a desire to develop long-term expertise in the structural and electrical aspects of utility design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create 2D foundation layout drawings for utility substations using AutoCAD.
  • Prepare grounding plan drawings showing subsurface wire layouts for electrical substations.
  • Develop electrical layout drawings including plan views and sectional views.
  • Assist in assembling full substation design packages including structural and electrical components.
  • Coordinate design details with engineering staff to ensure technical accuracy and project standards.
  • Communicate regularly via email with internal team members and external utility clients.
  • Maintain project documentation and drawing files according to company procedures.
  • Support long-term project development and continuous improvement in design processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD is required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and professional email communication is essential.
  • 1–3 years of drafting or engineering experience in the utility, electrical, or power industry preferred.
  • Experience with substation layouts, grounding design, or electrical drawings is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with STAAD or other structural analysis software is a plus and may lead to increased compensation.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and commitment to long-term career development.

  • Full-time position (40 hours/week)
