Job Title: Food Service Worker
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Reports to: Food Service Manager / Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-time or part-time (shifts may include early mornings, weekends, holidays)
Position Summary
The Food Service Worker will assist in the preparation, service, and clean-up of food and dining areas in a fast-paced environment. This role includes setting up service stations, portioning and serving food items, maintaining cleanliness, and following all food-safety and sanitation regulations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up serving areas/stations with appropriate supplies, food items, utensils, and trays.
- Portion food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and dishware.
- Serve food to customers, patients, or employees according to scheduled meal times, menu plans, and departmental policies.
- Assist in food preparation including cold salads, sandwich fillings, fresh fruit, simple desserts, beverages, as needed.
- Ensure all foods are stored, handled, and served in compliance with sanitation and food safety requirements.
- Clean, sanitize, and maintain work areas, equipment, counters, steam tables, refrigerators/freezers, dishwashing stations, and floors.
- Transport meal trays or carts to service areas or bedside (if healthcare setting), and return soiled trays/dishes for cleaning.
- Help restock food items, utensils, condiments, and supplies; maintain inventory as directed.
- Operate kitchen equipment and tools safely (e.g., dish machine, slicer, mixer, steam table, knives).
- Adhere to uniform and personal hygiene standards, comply with health regulations.
- Assist with daily transaction reports, if applicable (e.g., meal counts or cash receipts) and communicate with the manager about menu changes or guest feedback.
- Perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling carts, standing, bending, reaching, and walking for extended periods.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications & Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred/desired.
- Previous food service experience is a plus, but not always required.
- Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Basic math ability useful for portioning and transactional duties.
- Strong attention to sanitation, food safety, and proper storage practices.
- Customer service orientation and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
- Physical stamina: able to stand and walk for extended periods; lift and move objects (frequently up to ~20 lbs; occasionally more with assistance) as noted in similar roles.
- Ability to work in kitchen areas with heat, humidity, steam, dish-and pot-washing zones.
- Must be willing to work variable shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on business needs.
Working Conditions
- Kitchen or food-service environment: hot and humid conditions possible, dish areas, steam, refrigerators/freezers.
- Continuous standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing/pulling carts, and lifting items.
- Possible shift rotations; schedule may change based on operational needs.
Preferred Certification(s)
- Food Handler’s Permit or Food Service Certificate preferred.
- Training in sanitation or food safety (such as ServSafe or equivalent) a plus.
